Post Ripples Conference (Part 2 - HK)

I'll just recall what I liked about the Ripples conference

Firstly, the food is great! The OC made every meal unique HK dining experience.
Day 1 - experience BBQing in the cool (freezing occasionally) weather. Not something that one would not have encountered in the tropical region.
Day 2 - Breakfast at the hostel, some typical chinese breakfast of porridge and spring roll - very local. Lunch at the Uni cafeteria - much to our surprise, we had Tim Sum and some local dishes. Dinner is in MongKok for my study tour. Got some snacks from roadside stalls such as 臭豆腐 and 炸肠. Had a proper meal in a very local HK restaurant, food is affordable and good but not much of a surprise as it's pretty much standard Canto food, except that they do served instestines and oyster porridge.
Day 3 - If I remember correctly, I think it's noodles. Lunch again back at the cafeteria with more local cuisines. Didn't get the typical HK food for the dinner but still excellent food in a 浙江 restuarant.
Day 4 - Hmm, don't really recall what I had. Maybe I'll try to search the photos.

Okay, food is done, perhaps we should talk about the content of the conference.

Content-wise, the objectives of the conference is to

  1. To enrich delegates’ understanding towards issues of Corporate Social Responsibility and Entrepreneurship
  2. To introduce the Chinese cultures in Greater China region to the world
  3. To discuss AIESEC experience focusing on Cultural of Excellence (CoE)
A number of speakers are invited to talk on the CSR issues, and they approached CSR from different views -
from the views of the ancient like Dr Charles Yeung, CEO of Glorious Sun did,
from the approach of the government like The Honorable Bernard Chan, Chairman of Hong Kong Council of Social Service did
maybe I had attended a similar talk before (also organised by AIESEC, before I'm an @er), hence content-wise, I found this section a bit repetitive and not learn as much as others had.

The following day, which focus is on entrepreneurship, is more inspiring to me. Ms Belle, founder of BeansBox Studio was sharing her journey into entrepreneurship. She was by training a lawyer, but decided that web-designing was her passion and intended to pursue that passion despite objection by her family and friends. Her team has grown ever since and helps many cooperations/organisations to design their websites (including her Alumni - HKU Law Faculty)

Other speakers from TEN (The Entrepreneur Network, HK) also came to share their experience and difficulties that they encountered when venturing new territories. They also gave us some tips and advice of what it takes to be an entrepreneur; to me that afternoon of conference has been one of the most rewarding that I gain for the trip.

Look out for Part 3 - Coming soon...
